XP Tips para mejorarlo

Aumentando la Velocidad de Conexión
Debido a un servicio que no utilizamos llamado QoS (Quality of Service) nuestro ancho de banda se ve reducido en un 20% aún cuando este servicio este desactivado. Por lo tanto para recuperarlo abrimos las "Directivas de Grupo" utilizando el comando gpedit.msc (ir a inicio/ejecutar ó presionar simultanemamente la tecla de windows y r). Posteriormente expandemos la vista del lado izquierdo en la siguiente secuencia: Configuración del equipo/Plantillas Administrativas/Red/Programador de paquetes QoS. En la ventana de la derecha damos doble click en "Limitar ancho de bada reservado". Posteriormente, en la pestaña de "Configuración" habilitamos la casilla "Habilitada" y asignamos a "Límite de ancho de banda (%):" a 0 (cero). Damos click en "Aceptar" y cerramos la herramienta de "Directiva de grupo". Con ello lograremos un mayor aprovechamiento de nuestra conexión a internet.

Acelerando la navegación en la red local
Dado que Windows XP nació a partir de Windows 2000, irremediablemente heredó un bug que a la fecha no ha sido corregido por los programadores de Microsoft. Este tiene que ver con el tiempo que se pierde en explorar una red local dado que Windows busca el folder de las tareas programadas antes de mostrarnos las PCs y los recursos compartidos que forman la red. Para componer este bug ir al registro (utilizando el comando regedit) y navegar siguiendo la siguiente secuencia HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace. Localizar la clave {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF, dar click-derecho en ella y eliminarla. Por último cerrar el registro. A partir de ahora la navegación en la red local será más rápida.

Users who want to copy and paste text out of pdf documents might have noticed that the text in the destination document will have line breaks just like the original pdf document had. This is usually something that is not wanted and while it is not a big problem to remove the line breaks manually when short paragraphs have been pasted it becomes a bigger problem for longer texts.
Auto Unbreak is a small 22 Kilobyte tool that has only one purpose. It takes text from pdf documents and removes the line breaks of those texts before it provides the user with an option to copy the newly formatted text to the clipboard again.
Auto Unbreak is a portable application that can be executed from any location of a computer system. It ships with two files that define merge and exception rules which might come in handy for users who deal with specifically formatted text.
The rule files can be edited in every text editor.

Respected academic journals Science and Nature will no longer accept manuscripts written in Microsoft's Office 2007 suite.
The decision was made because the latest version of Word is no longer compatible with Mathematical Markup Language (MathML), the de facto standard for writing equations in text documents, according to recent notices posted on the Web sites of both Science and Nature journals. In Office 2007, Microsoft's own Office MathML (OMML) is used for equations.
"Because of changes Microsoft made in its recent Word release that are incompatible with our internal workflow, which was built around previous versions of the software, Science cannot, at present, accept any files in the new .docx format produced through Microsoft Word 2007, either for initial submission or for revision," Science journal stated on its site.
Likewise, Nature said: "It currently cannot accept files saved in Microsoft Office 2007 formats [because] equations and special characters -- for example, Greek letters -- cannot be edited and areincompatible with Nature's own editing and typesetting programs." Murray Sargent, an Office software development engineer, noted on a Microsoft developer blog that Microsoft had looked at the need to maintain robust performance when it chose to integrate its OMML instead of MathML.
Sargent said: "Naturally there's been a lot of discussion as to why we even have OMML, since MathML is really good." to include Word-oriented features, such as images, comments, revision markings and formatting into maths zones, but MathML is geared towards allowing only mathematical data in maths zones. Maths zones are areas in which users can input mathematical components and equations. "A subsidiary consideration is the desire to have an XML [document] that corresponds closely to the internal [standard] format, aiding performance and offering readily achievable robustness," he said, adding that since both MathML and OMML are XML-based, they can be converted from one into the other. "So it seems you can have your cake and eat it too," Sargent said. However, Science maintains that Word 2007 users should be aware that equations created with the default equation editor included in Microsoft Word 2007 and used in revisions will not be accepted by the academic journal, "even if the file is converted to a format compatible with earlier versions of Word". Science said this is because "conversion will render equations as graphics and prevent electronic printing of equations and because the default equation editor packaged with Word 2007 -- for reasons that, quite frankly, utterly baffle us -- was not designed to be compatible with MathML". Responding to the issues highlighted by Science and Nature, Sargent said in a separate blog posting that Word 2007's new mathematical facility is a huge improvement over previous approaches. "But anytime such big improvements occur, there can be, and evidently are, problems with upgrading," he said. "I think the trouble is well worth it in both user convenience, and the marvellous typographic quality." Microsoft was unable to respond by press time. You really can find identities of top patent holders Ah, patents. The topic has pretty much taken charge of my life since lastweek's column revealing the lack of any way to identify the top 10 living U.S. patent holders.

Apparently half the Earth's population has something to say about patents, and most of them are e-mailing me. My inbox has been blowing up like Anna Nicole Smith between diets.

But the deluge has its upsides. The column prompted a few patent database companies to take a whack at the question. Two — ipIQ of Chicago and 1790 Analytics of New Jersey — came up with answers.

So here, for the first time, is a list of the 10 most-prolific inventors. This is from ipIQ:

1. Shunpei Yamazaki, Japan, 1,432 patents. Yes, it seems to be true: The top individual holder of U.S. patents is based at Tokyo tech research firm Semiconductor Energy Laboratory. For decades, the popular assumption has been that Thomas Edison is the all-time patent king with 1,093 patents. Yamazaki blows away Edison, and he is still inventing and getting patents.

2. Donald Weder, Highland, Ill., 1,322. This isthe guy who has invented dozens of ways to make flower pots, dozens ofways to bundle flowers, and a whole lot of other things that have to dowith florists. When ipIQ sent me its results, Weder showed 1,321patents — but he got another one Tuesday. The title: "Apparatus forforming and securing a decorative pleated cover about a flower pot."

3. Kia Silverbrook, Sydney, 801. When Australia's patent agency marked its centenary in 2004, it celebrated great Australian inventions — such as vegemite. The country isn't much known for invention. On the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's 1997 list, no Australian appeared in the top 100. The secretive Silverbrook, though, runs Silverbrook Research, and he has zoomed to No. 3 with
inventions such as a tiny ink-jet printer that can fit in a mobile phone.

4. George Spector, New York, 723. Hey, here's a guy who really did invent a better mousetrap! It's patent No.5,528,853, "Magnetic computerized mouse trap," issued in 1996. Spector seems like a throwback to the likes of Dick Van Dyke's Caractacus Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Spector churns out all sorts of oddities, such as the Porto Auto Oil Easy Drain and a motorized pot-washing tool. Back in 1979, Spector apparently caused quite a stir by patenting a board game with the title "puck projecting game." Some people thought he'd patented hockey.

5. Gurtej Sandhu, Boise, 576.

6. Warren Farnworth, Boise, 547.

7. Salman Akram, Boise, 527.

All three work for Micron Technology in that great mecca of American invention, Idaho. "It is rather incredible,"says Tony Breitzman of 1790 Analytics. "As a rule, other than Akram andFarnworth (who have a lot of co-patents), there is not muchduplication."

Micron is the last surviving U.S. maker of DRAM chips, which are important in just about every electronic device.

But why Micron, with its $600 million annual R&D budget? IBM and Microsoft spend 10 times that on research.

Micron CEO Steve Appleton brought up a couple of reasons. One is that in its hypercompetitive industry, Micron has to have the protection of lots of patents to survive, so "The culture of the company recognizes and rewards innovation," he says. But a lot of tech companies could say
that.

So maybe it helps that at Micron, the patent attorneys' offices are right in the labs so they can work with the researchers to nail down patents right out of the box.

8. Mark Gardner, Cedar Creek, Texas, 512.
Gardner zorks for AMD, Intel's peskiest competitor. You can find his patents deep inside AMD's microprocessors. His most recent patent, in June, was titled, "Ultrathin high-K gate dielectric with favorable interface properties for improved semiconductor device performance." I think I'm going to ask for one for Christmas.

9. Heinze Focke, Verden, Germany, 508. Focke's patents mostly center on packaging — both on types of packages and processes for packaging assembly lines.

10. Joseph Straeter, Highland, Ill., 477. Once again, we're back to flowers. Like a hockey player lucky enough to skate on Wayne Gretzky's line, you can pick up a lot of points just by being there. Straeter works for No. 2 patent holder Weder, and most of Straeter's patents are shared with Weder.

Now, 1790 Analytics came up with basically the same list, but it also ran a different version that separated out utility patents from design patents. The latter are more about changing the appearance of an existing invention. If you do that, the names on the list stay the same, except Straeter drops off — replaced, remarkably, by yet another Micron researcher, Leonard Forbes.

What else have I gleaned from the patent e-mail onslaught?

Well, I got an e-mail from Esther Takeuchi, who works on battery research for Greatbatch, a maker of power sources for a lot of medical devices. She says that she's been told she has more patents — 126 — than any other living woman and wonders if it's true.

From the lists I've seen and from poking around the USPTO's database, it seems likely that she is indeed the most-prolific female inventor.

And then there's one other oddity, pointed out by reader Michael Ravnitzky. This would be the Invention Secrecy Act of 1951.

It's possible that any patent list results are skewed because various government agencies have the ability to classify any patent as secret and make it invisible to the public.

The USPTO even keeps a chart of "invention secrecy activity." It shows that so far in 2005, there have been 106 "new secrecy orders imposed." There are 4,915 "total secrecy orders in effect."

So if among all those florist patents Weder and Straeter invented the quantum computing secret decoder ring, we'd never know about it.

Kompozer es un editor web WYSIWYG basado en Nvu, que cuenta con licencia GPL. Creado con el fin de ser una alternativa libre a Adobe Dreamweaver, surge luego de Nvu, quien dejo de ser desarrollado. Fue bautizado con el nombre de Kompozer debido a que el mismo estaba registrado por Linspire. Compatible con las plataformas Windows, MAC, Linux, Debian, RedHat.

• Características: incluido administrador de ficheros via FTP, editor CSS,
  barras de herramientas administrables, validador HTML.
• Ventajas: fácil de usar, software libre, multiplataforma, soporte para varios idiomas.

The list is based on Alexa’s traffic rank, and this data was backed up by reports from quantified sites on quantcast and traffic reports from some of the site admins.

Here is the list, as of December 29, public BitTorrent sites only.

1. Mininova

Without a doubt the most visited BitTorrent site. In November, Mininova reached a milestone by entering the list of the 50 most visited websites on the Internet.

2. IsoHunt

IsoHunt continued to grow this year. In September they were forced to close their trackers to US traffic because of the issues they have with the MPAA, but this had no effect on the visitor count.

3. The Pirate Bay

The Pirate Bay has been in the news quite a bit this year and remains not only the most used BitTorrent tracker, but also one of the most visited BitTorrent sites. At the moment they are fighting with IsoHunt for the second place in this list.

4. Torrentz

Torrentz is the only “torrent site” in the top 10 that doesn’t host .torrent files. Several improvements and new features have been introduced over the past year such as a comment system, private bookmarks and a cleaner layout.

5. BTjunkie

BTjunkie was one of the fastest risers last year and continued to grow throughout 2007. Last month they were, like many others, forced to leave their ISP (LeaseWeb), but the transition to a new host went smoothly and didn’t result in any downtime.
